Short-term rental cleaning is graded by strangers in public, which makes it a different job from cleaning a home someone lives in. A turnover has to fit a fixed window, hit a photographable standard, and catch the specific details that cost a rating.
A guest does not compare your listing to their own home. They compare it to the last hotel they stayed in, and that is the standard the review is written against.
What generates a one-star line about cleanliness
- A hair in the bathroom — the single most cited item in cleanliness complaints
- A previous guest's item in a drawer or under the bed
- An empty toilet roll with no spare in sight
- Fingerprints on glass and stainless, which photograph badly
- A fridge with leftovers, or a bin that was not emptied
- Dust on surfaces at eye level in photos: headboards, shelves, lampshades
None of those are hard. All of them are missed when a turnover is treated as a fast house clean.
What a turnover includes that a house clean does not

- 3Consumables restocked from your on-site stock, and a heads-up when it runs low.
- 4An inventory check, with anything damaged or missing photographed and sent the same day.
- 5A final walkthrough against a presentation checklist before the door is locked.
The window, not the clock
Turnovers are scheduled against checkout time, not a fixed slot. A studio takes about ninety minutes, a two-bedroom two to three. Any operator who cannot finish with margin before check-in is running the schedule too tight, and the guest arriving to a crew still working is worse than a late clean.
Deep cleaning still has to happen
A turnover maintains presentation. It does not reach grout, behind appliances or inside cabinets. Book a deep clean monthly or quarterly depending on booking density, or the build-up eventually shows up in the photographs.
