Chicago homes spend five months sealed shut. Spring cleaning here is not a tidy: it is clearing what a closed house accumulated. Salt residue by the doors, dust that never had anywhere to go, and radiator grime that has been baking since November.
The list below is in order. Working top to bottom and dirty to clean means you are not redoing rooms because dust fell onto something you already finished.
Start with the air
Before touching a surface, open every window and swap the furnace filter. Five months of recirculated air has loaded that filter, and cleaning a house while the system pushes old dust around is wasted effort.
Entryways take the worst of it
- Salt residue on floors, thresholds and the bottom of doors — it is corrosive and it etches finishes if it overwinters
- Mats lifted, beaten and washed, and the floor underneath them cleaned
- Boot trays descaled, coat closets emptied and vacuumed out
The heat sources
Radiators and baseboard heaters collect dust all winter and then bake it, which is where a lot of the stale smell in a Chicago apartment comes from. Vacuum the fins with a brush attachment, then wipe. Vent covers come off and get washed rather than dusted.
Windows, inside and in the tracks
- Interior glass and sills, which have five months of condensation residue
- The tracks, which collect grit and hold moisture
- Screens, if they were left in over winter
- Curtains and blinds — fabric holds the winter smell more than anything else in the room
Then the usual deep-clean work
Grout, baseboards, behind appliances, light fixtures, inside the oven and fridge. This is the point where a spring clean and a standard deep clean become the same job, and where most people decide to hand it over.
How long to allow
A full spring reset on a two-bedroom runs four to six hours done properly, and most of a day on a house. Splitting it across two weekends is more realistic than most people expect, which is the honest argument for booking it out.
