Most Chicago homes need a deep clean once or twice a year. What moves that number is not how tidy you are, it is how much traffic the space takes, whether anyone in the house sheds or smokes, and how long it has been since anyone touched the places you cannot see from standing height.
There is a difference between a home that looks clean and a home that is clean, and it is measured in the places nobody looks. Grout lines. The top edge of the shower door. Behind the fridge. The vent cover above the stove. A weekly tidy keeps the visible surfaces honest; none of it reaches those.
The short answer
Once or twice a year for most homes. Twice if the space takes real traffic, once if it does not. That is the baseline, and then four things move it.
- Pets. A shedding dog or cat roughly doubles the rate at which hair and dander work into fabric, vents and skirting. Twice a year becomes three times.
- Household size. Four people in a two-bedroom generate build-up faster than two people in a four-bedroom. Traffic matters more than square footage.
- Cooking. A kitchen used properly every night develops a grease film on cabinet fronts and the hood exterior within months. Takeaway households do not have this problem.
- Age of the finishes. Older grout and porous stone hold soil that newer sealed surfaces shrug off, so the same clean lasts less time.
How to tell it is time
You do not need a calendar. The house tells you, if you know where it says it.
- 1Run a finger along the top of a door frame. If it comes back grey, the dust has been settling longer than a vacuum reaches.
- 2Look at the grout in the shower at eye level, then look at the grout at ankle level. If they are different colours, that is soap scum, not shadow.
- 3Open the cabinet above the stove and touch the door front. Tacky means grease, and grease traps everything else.
- 4Pull the fridge forward six inches. Whatever is back there has been back there a while.
Deep clean versus standard clean
A standard clean maintains what is already in reasonable shape: surfaces, floors, bathrooms, kitchen. A deep clean adds the build-up work — grout scrubbed by hand, baseboards and door frames wiped, light fixtures and vent covers dusted, behind and underneath reachable furniture, kitchen degreasing. It takes roughly 45% longer than a standard visit of the same space, which is exactly why it costs more.
The distinction matters when you are starting a recurring plan. If it has been more than six months, book the deep clean first. Starting biweekly service on a home with heavy build-up means the first several visits are spent catching up, and you pay more for that than one deep clean would have cost.
What a deep clean will not fix
Worth saying plainly, because the disappointment is usually about expectations rather than effort. Long-standing mineral etching on shower glass can be permanent. Grout that was never sealed may lighten but not return to white. Carpet stains that have set need extraction, which is a different trade. A good crew will tell you this on the day rather than charge you for a result they cannot deliver.
Seasonal timing
In Chicago the two natural moments are early spring, once the windows can finally open and the winter's worth of closed-up air needs clearing, and late autumn, before the house seals up again for five months. If you only do one a year, do the autumn one. You live inside it longer.
